Communications positions available at Strife

This academic year, we are seeking several communications positions at Strife, including a leader for our Communications Team – which guides all of our communications, social media, and web strategies.

Strife has a significant audience of academics and students globally. Our communications team has grown over the years to ensure that the great content developed by our contributors and edited by our editorial team is marketed broadly around the world.

Communications Manager

The Strife Operations Team seeks a pro-active Communications Manager to join our busy operations team. The Communications Manager is responsible for the promotion and publication strategies of our dual publication. Managing a small team and working with the managing board the Communications Manager designs and operationalises our communications strategy including, social media, strategic partnerships, event and publication promotion. We are looking for a candidate with experience in strategic communications ideally within publishing or a relevant academic field. The Communications Manager will ideally be a graduate/post-graduate student.

Web Manager

The Web Manager will be responsible for managing the hosting, design, infrastructure, and search engine optimization of Strife’s websites and content management system. Duties will include general administration of Strife’s websites, content management system, designs and themes, technical hosting infrastructure, search engine optimization efforts, and information security efforts.

Web Officer

The Web Officer will be responsible for working with the Web Manager in supporting the hosting, design, infrastructure, and search engine optimization of Strife’s websites and content management system.

This role is intended for someone willing to learn more about the WordPress content management system and some basic web hosting administration over the course of an academic year. A technical background is not a requirement. The Web Manager will work closely with this role in terms of technical training and coaching for the WordPress system used by Strife.

Publications Officer

We seek a highly organised individual with a strong interest in publishing to serve as Publications Officer on the Strife communications team. The Publications Officer is responsible for managing the posting of articles and other content to the Strife blog. The role requires close coordination between the Strife blog management team and Strife’s communications team to ensure articles are posted on-time and accurately. The candidate should be experienced in communicating clearly and effectively, have experience in time management and/or project management, and be interested in publishing, marketing, and/or communications.

Social Media Co-Ordinator

The Social Media Co-ordinator manages Strife’s social media presence on LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. They work closely with the Communications Manager, Editor in Chief, and both Managing Editors to ensure that Strife’s content and programmes are adequately promoted and marketed. They make take on additional communications tasks as well.

Editor Positions available at Strife

This academic year, we are seeking several editors for editorial positions at Strife, including Senior Editors, Commissioning Editors, Series Editors, and Copy Editors.

Our editorial positions are outstanding roles for postgraduate and doctoral students to hone their editing skills at an internationally recognized academic publication.

Senior Editors

Strife seeks to hire several dedicated PhD students for the position of Senior Editors. Senior Editors are the core frontline of Strife’s editorial process. They work on both of STRIFE’s publications to ensure high quality content is developed to meet with our publications standards. They work on a one to one basis with contributors to the Journal to develop their submissions for publications. We are looking for several highly motivated individuals to join our Senior Editing team, candidates should be enrolled on a PhD programme and have an interest in academic publishing.

Series Editors

Strife seeks to hire a number of Series Editors for the upcoming academic year. Series Editors design, promote, collate and edit a series of blog submissions on a topic of their specialism or choice. They will work under the guidance of the Series Development Co-Ordinator to build their series and oversee it throughout the publication process. Series Editors should have a clear idea of the topic they wish to focus their series on. Series Editors should be post-graduate students with an interest in academic publishing.

Copy Editors

Strife seeks to hire a team of copy editors to aide the final stage editing on STRIFE blog. Copy editors are responsible for final stage editing for all submissions that are published on the blog. They work to ensure all pieces are published in a timely manner under the guidance of our blog operations and coordination team. Copy editors should be post-graduate students with an interest in academic publishing.

Commissioning Editors

Strife Seeks a set of Commissioning Editors to aide Strife in building its outreach and contributing pool. Commissioning Editors will be responsible for recruiting and commissioning academic submissions from external institutions, helping promote and develop STRIFE publications worldwide. Commissioning Editors will be expected to fulfil editorial duties in their specialist areas as required by the editorial teams. Commissioning Editors should be post-graduate students with a keen interest in academic publishing.

Interviewer

Strife seeks 1-2 interviewers to lead our interview series on the Strife Blog. Each interviewer will be responsible for a published interview each month during the academic year – conducted in-person, virtually, or via email. Interviewers are expected to determine who they will be interviewing and the topics/questions to be discussed in coordination with the Strife Blog management team.

Strife Editorial Management Positions available at Strife

This academic year, we are seeking several editorial management positions at Strife, including two Managing Editor roles, which lead our publications under the direction of the Editor in Chief.

Managing at Strife is a significant volunteer commitment but one that comes with great rewards and a strong sense of accomplishment. You’ll get to lead highly motivated teams of postgraduate and doctoral candidates at one of the leading institutions in our field.

Managing Editor, Strife Journal

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to manage and develop Strife journal. The candidate will be highly organised with a strong editorial background and a good awareness of the publishing process. The ME Journal will also be a central member of Strife’s Executive Committee and will work closely with the executive and management team to ensure STRIFE’s development. We would prefer a post-upgrade PhD candidate but accept applications from those with an evidenced history in publishing and or editorial work.

Managing Editor, Strife Blog

We are seeking a highly motivated Postgraduate student to manage and develop STRIFE blog. The candidate will be highly organised with a strong editorial background and a good awareness of the publishing process. The ME Blog will also be a central member of STRIFE’s executive committee and will work closely with the executive and management team to ensure STRIFE’s development. We would prefer a PhD candidate but accept applications from any postgraduate student with an evidenced history in publishing and or editorial work. Strife blog publishes 5 days a week during the academic year – the Managing Editor role leads a large staff through the publishing process requiring strong organisational and time management skills.

Co-ordinating Editor, Strife Journal

We seek a highly organised individual with a good eye for detail and a strong interest in publishing. The Coordinating Editor is responsible for the relationship management and communication between editors, contributors and the STRIFE journal team. The candidate will be experienced in communicating clearly and efficiently, have experience in inbox management and bring a first point of contact for queries. The CE will work in partnership with the Managing Editor to ensure the journal is published in a timely manner and articles are progressed through editing and publishing efficiently.

Co-Ordinating Editor, Strife Blog

We seek a highly organised individual with a good eye for detail and a strong interest in publishing. The coordinating editor is responsible for the relationship management and communication between editors, contributors and the STRIFE blog team. The candidate will be experienced in communicating clearly and efficiently, have experience in inbox management and bring a first point of contact for queries. The CE is also responsible for initial screening and acceptance of external submissions.

Series Development Co-ordinator, Strife Blog

We are seeking an effective people manager to guide, develop and aide our programme of series throughout the academic year. The coordinator will be responsible for managing a team of series editors through the organisation, recruitment, writing and publishing of their series. The coordinator is a core point of contact for series editors and is responsible for liaising between editors and the management team to ensure the production of relevant, cutting edge series across the year.

Project Manager, War Studies at 60

As part of the King’s College, London Department of War Studies at Sixty Celebrations we are seeking a highly motivated project manager to oversee the development of a set of publications for STRIFE. The project aims to create a set of profiles and insights into the research and contributions of the department over its sixty years. The project manager will be responsible for the overall organisation and development of the project in partnership with the executive committee.

Strife Recruitment for 2021-2022 is Open!

Strife is an internationally recognized dual-format publication, led by doctoral and graduate researchers based in the Department of War Studies at King’s College London.

We study all aspects of ‘conflict’, combining political, historical, literary, and philosophical approaches to conflict to provide thought-provoking and unique perspectives for our readers. We have over 3.5 million readers a year, with strong engagement from governmental and academic institutions.

Strife is comprised of an academic blog, Strife Blog, as well as the peer-reviewed academic journal, Strife Journal, which is published quarterly. Both platforms, as well as their complementary events such as conferences, issue launches, and presentations, are centred thematically on conflict in all its shapes and forms. We are continuing to grow and expand, and we want you to join us to be a part of the editorial board.

Despite the current COVID-19 pandemic and accompanying challenges, Strife continues to grow, offering our readers regular new scholarship. Starting last year, we have opened up the exciting possibility for postgraduate students, from any country, anywhere in the world, to become a part of the team at Strife. All of our roles are held by volunteers.

Joining Strife presents a unique opportunity to work alongside a diverse group of postgraduate students, building expertise in conflict studies. Teamwork is a key component of Strife, as is the sense of community we have built over the years. Recruits will also avail of contact with professors and leading academic experts through our events, publications, and networking opportunities.
